Protesters 'burn' Novi Sad, demand Vučić's "head"

Serbia continues to see mass protests. On Friday, police used tear gas and stun grenades on a university campus in Novi Sad to disperse protesters who demanded early elections, which they hope would oust President Aleksandar Vucic and his ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS).

In a late-night speech, Vucic said 11 police officers were injured. There was no information on how many protesters were injured.

On Friday evening, thousands of people gathered on the campus of the state university. Protesters held banners that read: "We don't want blockades, we want elections" and "Students have an urgent demand: Call elections."

Protesters clashed with police in front of the philosophy faculty and threw fireworks, while police used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the crowd.

"We will not allow the destruction of state institutions. Serbia is a strong and responsible state ," Vučić said.

He accused foreign security services of being behind anti-government protesters in Serbia and said his supporters would hold rallies in cities across Serbia on Sunday. Vucic and his SNS party have been rocked by months of protests across Serbia, including blockades of state universities, sparked by the deaths of 16 people last November when the roof of a railway station collapsed. The protests were largely peaceful until August 13, when dozens of police officers and civilians were injured in clashes.

Protesters have blamed corruption for the Novi Sad railway station disaster and are demanding early elections in the hope of toppling Vucic and his party.

Students, opposition groups and anti-corruption watchdogs have accused Vucic and his allies of links to organised crime, using violence against political rivals and suppressing media freedoms, charges they deny.
