Why are airstrikes in Gaza so dangerous?

The United Nations has condemned the airdropping of food aid into the Gaza Strip, warning that these methods could end up killing the starving people they are intended to help.

Over the weekend, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates and Israel carried out their first aid parachute drops in months on the Palestinian territory, at a time when, according to sources, a third of the population has not consumed food for days.

Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), stated that this method “will not stop the hunger that is worsening every day” and could even lead to tragic consequences:

" They are expensive, inefficient and can kill hungry civilians ," he wrote in a reaction on the X platform.

Why are airdrops dangerous?

According to humanitarian aid experts, airdropping packages is used only as a last resort, when land and sea routes are blocked. But this method is fraught with problems:

- Packages can fall on people and cause casualties.

-The amount of aid is minimal: one plane brings about one truckload, while Gaza needs about 500 truckloads of aid every day.

-Some of the aid ends up on the black market, after being looted by armed groups.

Sky News' Jordan expert Sally Lockwood says the aid that has so far arrived is not reaching the most vulnerable. "It's an attempt to give something, but it's very limited, often perceived as an act of desperation," she added.

Why are airstrikes in Gaza so dangerous?

Why are they happening now?

Israel had halted supplies to Gaza in early March and reopened some aid points in May, but with tight restrictions to prevent what it says is misuse of the aid by Hamas militants. Currently, only three border crossings (Kerem Shalom in the south, Crossing 147 in the center, and Erez in the north) are under full Israeli control.
