Why Vucic was silent about Banjska at the UN

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, in the first part of his speech before the UN Security Council, did not talk about the events of September 24, 2023 in Banjska, even though, as he himself explained, its causes and motives, "were the most serious consequence of all that the Serbs are experiencing in Kosovo".

According to the Serbian media, the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, also noticed this, who in his speech asked why Vucic did not mention the three Serbs killed in Banjska, saying that the President of Serbia did not did this because he knew that they were terrorists financed by Serbia, and that it was Vucic who ordered the action in Banjska.

Kurti said that September 24 was part of a larger attack to endanger the north of Kosovo. After the participants of the discussion in the UN Security Council spoke about Banjska, such as the representative of the United States of America, Linda Thomas Greenfield, who described the incident as a "violent Serbian paramilitary attack" that resulted in the death of a police of Kosovo, or even the head of UNMIK, Caroline Ziadeh, who believes that Banjska and the elections in the north are an obstacle to the agreements, Vucic was forced to address this topic as well.

He spoke about Banjska's real reasons and recalled that they begged the Serbs and him personally to withdraw from the barricades and that he received the guarantees of the USA and the EU.

"They told me at the meeting, we trust you, we don't trust them (the USA and the EU), they will forget and trample on everything and hunt us like rabbits. I told them that we have to trust our American partners, that we cannot take more than that. Then they told me that they will remove the barricades, but they don't believe it ," he said.

He repeated several times when talking about Banjska, that people want to protect their doorstep and their families and that he does not believe that they have done it rightly. He has said that an investigation has been launched, but someone must understand that according to the UN Charter and Resolution 1244, only the territorial integrity of Serbia has been violated and that there are no other states whose integrity has been violated.

Speaking to the journalists after the hearing, Vučič stated that all those who defend Kurti mention Banjska and that he did not hesitate to answer this question, but neither did Kurti mention the Association. Boshko Jaksic, a foreign policy analyst, says the explanation for why Vucic kept Banjska silent in the first round of discussions is not overly complicated.

"All the statistics he gave, only the Chinese table was missing, they are Serbia's arguments. "Banjska is not an argument for Serbia, but against it, and it is completely understandable that he wanted to avoid it," he explains.

Asked if he could immediately clarify as he did afterwards, Jaksic said he had no knowledge of Vucic's tactical intentions.

"He did what he thought would bring him some points, although it was clear from the start that everything was going to turn into a typical race, as it has been so far. We have heard such exchanges of accusations", he says. According to his words, when talking about the epilogue of the session, he says that to some extent it is a diplomatic success of Serbia to fight for it to be discussed in the UNSC and for the session to be open and this is the maximum.

"There will be none of the expectation that now the whole world will listen to our views. But these are pieces of rhetoric for internal use. The status quo will remain even after this session" , he concludes.

"Vucic tried to avoid the topic that was later imposed by Kurti and that resulted in the loss of several lives," said Milija Bishevac, head of the Serbian People's Movement from Kosovo. He says that the Banjska incident was certainly presented in the world opinion as a terrorist act and that after that the diplomatic position of Serbia has deteriorated significantly.
