Fears of World War III are growing as Russia's leader, Vladimir Putin, is said to have ramped up production of a terrifying new nuclear missile.
Ukrainian intelligence has warned as a result that the weapon is being modernized for even more deadly attacks, the Daily Star writes.
The head of Ukraine's Foreign Intelligence Service, Oleh Ivashchenko, has reportedly claimed that Russia is planning serial production and modernization of the Oreshnik ballistic missile, further strengthening its nuclear potential.
Oreshnik is reported to be a modernized intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) developed by Russia.
It is said to be essentially an improved version of the RS-24 Yars intercontinental ballistic missile.
Ivashchenko told Ukrinform that “Russia intends to expand the serial production of the Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missile and is considering options for its modernization to increase the strike capability of its nuclear warhead.”
He further emphasized that the program is receiving priority funding from the National Wealth Fund of Russia, RBC Ukraine reported.
Stressing the strategic importance of the Oreshnik missile within Russia's military-industrial sector, Ivashchenko revealed that its serial production involves the participation of over 50 Russian companies.
These are said to include prominent institutions such as the Scientific Research Institute of Command Instruments, the Central Research Institute of Shipbuilding Machinery, JSC Krasnodar Instrument Manufacturing Plant Kaskad, JSC Kalugapribor, JSC Kaluga Electromechanical Plant, JSC Priboy, JSC Soliton Research Institute and JSC Sinvent Research Institute of Technical Systems.
Ivashchenko stressed that the Oreshnik is essentially an improved version of the RS-24 Yars, originally developed in the early 2000s.
The main innovation, he explained, is that "Oreshnik has two stages instead of three, which improves efficiency and maneuverability during launch."
Ukrainian intelligence has called on the global community to keep a vigilant eye on Russia's expanding missile capabilities, warning that "the expansion of serial production and modernization of nuclear systems pose a direct threat to the security of Europe and the world at large."
The Oreshnik missile is said to be stationed in Belarus, with Europe as its intended target.
