China welcomed the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, in Beijing with a grand state ceremony.
The head of the Kremlin was received in Tiananmen Square by President Xi Jinping, with whom he had a fraternal handshake and then attended the prepared activities together.
"Relations between Russia and China are stabilizing factors for the world. They are not opportunistic and they are not against anyone. Our cooperation in international affairs is one of the stabilizing factors on the international scene," said the Russian president.
According to the Reuters news agency, Putin's delegation consists of new Defense Minister Andrei Belousov, his predecessor, Sergeri Shoigu, Foreign Minister Lavrov and foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov.
Putin and Xi Jinping are expected to discuss some bilateral issues, economic cooperation and strengthening of relations, while at the end there will be signing of agreements.
Both leaders will have a joint press conference.
Analysts say the visit is an opportunity for Putin to present his revamped cabinet and emphasize continuity in relations with China. Most of the key members in his cabinet with experience dealing with their counterparts in China have either remained in their roles or been promoted.
He is also bringing a large business delegation with him, including Finance Minister Anton Siluanov and Central Bank Governor Elvira Nabiullina and heads of state-owned enterprises.
Sberbank CEO German Gref, businessman Oleg Deripaska, VTB chief Andrei Kostin, Rosneft chief Igor Sechin and Novatek chief Leonid Mikhelson are some of the list that have accompanied Putin to Beijing.
It marks Putin's first foreign visit since being sworn in for a six-year presidential term that will keep him in power until at least 2030.
