The Slovak government has reacted to the attack on Prime Minister Fico.
The Minister of Defense of Slovakia, Robert Kaliňák, stated that the prime minister has undergone an operation and that he is in an "extremely serious" condition for life.
In a press conference outside the hospital in Banská Bystrica, the minister said that doctors are doing everything possible to save the life of the prime minister, who suffered "severe polytrauma after several shots".
"The operation continued for three and a half hours. His medical condition is very complex indeed. We are particularly focused on Robert Fico's health. And we hope that he will be strong enough to make it," said Kaliňák.
He described the event as the worst in Slovakia's history.
"Today is the saddest moment in the 31 years of Slovakia's history... The attack on the prime minister is an attack on democracy. It is an attack on the state itself," said the minister.
Interior Minister Matush Šutaj Eštok said the attack was politically motivated, adding that the information is based on the suspect's first testimony. According to him, the author shot five times at the Prime Minister.
"This assassination attempt was politically motivated and the suspect made the decision to do it right after the presidential election. It is clear that this was politically motivated,” said Defense Minister Robert Kaliňák, speaking alongside Eštok.
