Putin provokes the West, Russian drones violate NATO space

Russian forces advance in eastern Ukraine, where they claim to have taken full control of the eastern town of Novohrodivka.

The town is located 12 km from Pokrovsk, a strategic road and rail junction for Kiev's military in the area.

A pro-Russian military blogger has published maps showing Russian forces attacking beyond Novohrodivka in at least 2 locations, about 7 km from Pokrovsk.

A Ukrainian officer told a radio interview that Kiev troops had abandoned Novohrodivka as their positions were not favorable for defense.

Last week, President Vladimir Putin declared that Ukraine's incursion into Russia's Kursk region had failed to slow Russia's advance in eastern Ukraine and had weakened Kiev's defense lines. But according to the head of the Ukrainian army, the Kursk incursion is working and Russian troops have not made progress in Pokrovsk over the past 6 days.

Meanwhile on Sunday, two NATO member states said Russian drones violated their airspace. Romania was the first to announce something like this after Moscow launched attacks against Ukraine overnight. Bucharest activated F-16 fighter jets to patrol its airspace while alerting residents of the two eastern regions via text messages.

Later, Latvia also announced that a Russian drone had crashed in the eastern part of the country the day before. While the violation of Latvian airspace appears to be a rare incident, Romania has confirmed several cases of drone fragments being found on its territory since the start of the ruk aggression against Ukraine in February 2022.
