The multilateral summit on Ukraine between Donald Trump, Volodymyr Zelensky, and European leaders appears to have exceeded the expectations of those present.
The US president spoke of "significant" progress, announcing that "within a week or two, we will know if we can resolve the war."
An informed source said that a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is hoped to be held "by the end of August."
But German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, according to Bloomberg, spoke of a meeting within two weeks. Merz described “very intensive” discussions at the White House, welcomed Donald Trump’s security guarantees for Ukraine and reiterated that territorial concessions cannot be imposed on Kiev.
During their phone call, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump also discussed the idea of a possible increase in the level of representatives of Moscow and Kiev in direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, Russian presidential adviser Yuri Ushakov said.
According to Interfax, during the telephone conversation between Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, "in particular, the idea was discussed that it would be necessary to study the possibility of increasing the level of representatives of the Ukrainian and Russian sides, that is, those representatives who participate in the aforementioned direct negotiations," Ushakov said.
The meeting in Washington on Ukraine has received maximum praise from President Trump.
"I had a very productive meeting with distinguished guests, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, French President Emmanuel Macron, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, at the White House, which concluded with another meeting in the Oval Office.
"During the meeting, we discussed Security Guarantees for Ukraine, which would be provided by various European countries, in coordination with the United States. Everyone was very pleased with the possibility of peace between Russia and Ukraine. At the end of the meetings, I called President Putin and began preparations for a meeting, at a location to be determined later, between President Putin and President Zelensky," Trump said.
And while the meeting was taking place at the White House, Moscow reiterated its position that it is against the deployment of NATO troops in Ukraine.
"We reiterate our consistently expressed position on the categorical rejection of any scenario involving the arrival of troops in Ukraine with the participation of NATO countries, which could lead to an uncontrollable escalation of the conflict with unpredictable consequences," Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, as quoted by the Interfax news agency. /Adapted Pamphlet/
