Russian President Vladimir Putin was not present at the negotiating table between US President Donald Trump, European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky this afternoon, but his influence and presence were clearly felt.
" I've known him for a long time and I've always had a very good relationship with him. I think President Putin wants a solution as well. We'll see ," Trump said of his Russian counterpart.
Although Trump appeared to speak on Putin's behalf, most European leaders gathered at the White House on Monday did not mention him by name. While Putin remains the central figure who could determine Ukraine's fate, it is still unclear whether he is truly committed to reaching a peace deal, as Trump has often implied, or is simply trying to buy time, as many critics suspect.
Trump stated that he expected a trilateral meeting between Russia, Ukraine and the United States to take place soon.
But the question of when this meeting might happen carries more significance than just timing. It speaks to the level of seriousness Putin has about negotiating an end to the war.
Trump expressed optimism, but also left room to accept an uncertain outcome.
"It's possible that this won't happen. But on the other hand, it's just as possible that it will," he said, adding: "We have to do our best. That's all we can do." /CNN
