The Slovenian government, determined to recognize Palestine, sends the proposal
The government of Slovenia has supported a motion to recognize the Palestinian state and asked the Parliament to do the same.

The Prime Minister of Slovenia, Robert Golob, said that his Government has sent the proposal for the recognition of the Palestinian state to the Parliament.

The Slovenian Parliament may meet next week and vote on the Government's proposal.

Parliament's agreement is needed for the Government's decision to be effective. Golob's ruling liberal party has a majority in the 90-seat Parliament and the vote on Palestinian state recognition is expected to be a formality.

The Slovenian Government's decision comes just two days after Spain, Norway and Ireland recognized the Palestinian state. Their attitudes were strongly condemned by Israel.

Slovenia would become the 10th European Union country to officially recognize the Palestinian state. Norway is not part of the 27-member bloc, but it usually aligns its foreign policies with those of the bloc.

Slovenia started the process of recognizing the Palestinian state in early May, but said it would wait until the situation in the Gaza war between Israel and Hamas - the US and EU-designated terrorist group - improves.

Golob said this week that he is speeding up the process after Israel's recent attacks on Rafah, which have caused more than 1 million Palestinians to flee there.

More than 140 countries recognize the Palestinian state – more than two-thirds of the United Nations.

The decision to recognize the Palestinian state has fueled friction in the EU's relations with Israel. Spain and Ireland are pushing for the EU to take action against Israel over its continued attacks in southern Gaza.

Israel launched the war in Gaza in response to a Hamas attack in southern Israel on October 7 that killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapped around 250 others.

The Israeli war has killed more than 36,000 Palestinians, half of them children and women, according to Palestinian health officials.

But the Israeli war has also caused a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, causing about 80% of the population to be displaced and hundreds of thousands of people to suffer from starvation, according to UN officials. /REL
