During the last visit of the German Chancellor to the Serbian capital, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the EU and Serbia for the extraction of lithium...

It seems that Aleksandar Vučić will not find it easy to make the West his own by means of the lithium that the Serbian underground has.

The citizens of the city of Valjevo rose in protest against the lithium mine. Thousands of citizens protested against the agreement reached between Serbia and Germany, which preceded a meeting between German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic in Belgrade.

They have gathered spontaneously, without the participation of political parties, while it was organized through social networks.

Nova.rs writes that the Serbian government should be worried, because this phenomenon risks affecting the whole of Serbia, while tomorrow there will be a protest in Loznica.

The protest in Valjeva was a surprise for many people. Without much fanfare and announcements, in the middle of July, the holiday season and record temperatures, the citizens gathered and sent a very clear message - there will be no lithium mining, which risks threatening their town as well.

Bodo Weber, political analyst and senior associate of the Council for Democratization Policies (DPC) in Berlin, in an interview with Danas, said that Serbia cannot guarantee environmental safety in these mines.

" First, the objective problem of the terrain in the Jadar region, underground water, etc., implies a geological situation for which experts claim that it is almost impossible to avoid pollution during exploitation. Secondly, the simple fact that it is impossible to implement any standards in a country where there is no rule of law or democracy, but systematic corruption , "he said.

Josip Juratovic, the deputy of the German Bundestag, is of a similar opinion, who said that Germany and the European Union cannot guarantee the standards of lithium mining in Serbia.

" I am of the opinion that the main issue in Serbia is not whether lithium will be mined in Serbia or not, but whether Serbian institutions are strong enough to supervise those standards. Therefore, it is necessary that the people of Serbia, like all the other peoples of the Western Balkans, finally understand that the manipulation of national emotions by national leaders is the main problem of the situation they are in ," Juratovic said.

We recall that during the German Chancellor's last visit to the Serbian capital, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the EU and Serbia for a strategic partnership for sustainable raw materials, which is a prelude to the opening of a lithium mine in Serbia. / P amphleti
