The director of the US Secret Service, Kimberly Cheatle, has resigned. This comes after a review of security lapses related to the recent assassination of former President Donald Trump.
CNN reports that Cheatle made the decision after being pressured by ongoing calls in Congress for her to resign and efforts by Republican lawmakers to impeach her.
Lawmakers were further angered after public testimony before the House Oversight Committee on Monday, where she was unwilling to answer many of the committee's questions.
The director of the American Secret Service said that the assassination of former President Donald Trump was the "biggest operational failure" of the agency in decades.
"On July 13th we failed," she said as she took full responsibility for the agency's mistakes in connection with the July 13 attack on Trump's Pennsylvania rally.
Trump was wounded in the ear after Thomas Matthew Crooks climbed onto the roof of a nearby building and opened fire.
