What game is Obama playing?

Did Obama push Biden to withdraw and why doesn't he support Kamal Harris?

What role has Barack Obama had and is playing in this very delicate political phase of the Democratic Party?

Let's just say that former President Obama chose to keep a low profile after Biden's withdrawal, actually to be honest, he chose silence: zero comment, zero support. Nothing, but a laconic phrase: "PD is sailing in unknown waters". Which translated in simple words means: we are in the presence of an unprecedented situation, we do not know how things will end.

The problem, however, is that Obama is not just a commentator or activist. In addition to being a former president, he is still young and influential.

After the silence, one sees the identikit of the inspirer, or of the one who gave the "last blow" to Biden, forcing him to end the race, also due to the closing of the taps (funding) from big donors. And we know full well that, when it comes to fundraising, Obama is still a war machine. After the "bombshell" dropped by Biden, Obama praised the president (as was somehow obvious) without mentioning Kamala Harris for a moment. It's like he wanted to show that he doesn't support him.

Here's what Obama wrote in his reaction to the news of Biden's withdrawal: "In the coming days we will be navigating uncharted waters. But I have tremendous confidence in the fact that the leaders of our party will be able to create a process from who will turn out to be an outstanding candidate".

In other words - and he says it clearly - he entrusts the Democratic leaders with the task of creating (instigating) a process after which another candidate will emerge. He almost takes it for granted that Harris shouldn't be the only one running.

One defender of Obama points out that the former president is acting "like an impartial elder on the machinations within the party." So no disrespect to Harris, but just that, "having no alternative candidate in mind... he decided not to immediately endorse Harris." In other words, according to several Democratic sources cited by the New York Times, "we shouldn't read too much into this move." Obama simply still has no idea what the right thing to do is.

But there is another non-secondary aspect to consider, very important from a psychological point of view. Biden has never forgiven Obama for not endorsing him in 2016, preferring Hillary Clinton, who then lost to Trump. In reality, it wasn't just Obama who turned his back on Biden that time. Nancy Pelosi and current Senate Democratic Majority Leader Chuck Schumer were also decisive. They did it again now. Major party leaders have ousted Biden, effectively forcing him to retire. They should have and could have done it a year ago, but they couldn't (or didn't want to).

Biden ran again in the party's (symbolic) primaries and, obviously, as president in office he won them. This year, taking advantage of the obvious weakness of the president, the leading Democrats have closed the "stable", hoping to save what can be saved and that it is not too late. /Adapted "Pamphlet" from "Il Giornale"
