
At least ten police officers and several prisoners were injured after a physical clash in the prison of Idrizova, in Skopje, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of North Macedonia announced today.
According to the spokesperson of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Toni Angellovski, the prisoners resisted during the police's attempt to check their cells, after information that they were carrying prohibited items.
During the raid, which was carried out by order of the Criminal Court of Skopje, the police found 63 mobile phones, 82 knives, four nails, 71 phone chargers and narcotic substances in the prisoners' cells.
"During the actions of the police, a larger group of prisoners gathered and actively resisted, but after the measures and actions taken, they were defeated. With this, ten police officers were injured, while some of the prisoners were also injured" , Angelovski said in a video published on the website of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
However, many photos from the cells of the Idrizova prison, where many prisoners with serious bodily injuries are seen, have been shared on social networks.
According to their family members, "special units intervened brutally, severely beating dozens of prisoners".
The prison directorate of Idrizova has not yet come out with official data regarding the incident in the prison of Idrizova, where crisis measures are still in force due to the lack of guards, and notifications of "security threat".
The special units and members of the North Macedonian Army have also been helping the prison police.
In recent months, Idrizova prison has faced several scandals, among others, the opening of an underground tunnel by prisoners who planned to escape.
There are about 1,206 prisoners serving sentences in Idrizova prison, including those with life imprisonment.
