Iran regime executes two Iranian opposition members in prison
Babak Alipour and Pouya Ghobadi

The dictatorial regime that rules Iran has begun a new wave of executions of the Mujahedin in various prisons. In addition to the two executions yesterday, today it executed two more members of the Mujahedin. I draw your attention to this report.

On March 31, 2026, the Iranian regime executed two more members of the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), Babak Alipour (34) and Pouya Ghobadi (33), in Ghezel Hesar Prison. This came one day after the execution of two other PMOI members from the same case, Mohammad Taghavi and Ali Akbar (Shahrokh) Daneshvarkar, on March 30.

Babak Alipour was a law graduate with a long history of political imprisonment for his activism. Pouya Ghobadi was an electrical engineer who had also spent years in prison for opposition activities. Both were arrested in early 2024 and held in Ward 209 of Evin Prison, where they endured months of severe physical and psychological torture, according to the report.

Their death sentences were handed down by Judge Iman Afshari at Branch 26 of Tehran's Revolutionary Court. A brief retrial on November 16, 2025, lasted only a few minutes for each defendant and ignored requests for a joint hearing. The Supreme Court upheld the sentences in December 2025.

In a joint statement issued with their co-defendants in December 2024, the prisoners declared that they would not trade their lives. They declared that the only path to justice lay with "the oppressed people of Iran, the brave Rebel Youth, and the enlightened consciences," and expressed pride in their quest for justice.

On the night of March 29, 2026, anti-riot forces raided the political prisoners' section in Ward 4 of Ghezel Hesar prison, beating the prisoners and transferring at least 19 of them - including Alipour, Ghobadi, Vahid Bani-Amerian and Abolhassan Montazer - to solitary confinement. Communication with families was subsequently cut off.

The executions are part of a wider crackdown on PMOI members. Similar cases include the executions of Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani in July 2025, who were also tortured in Ward 209 and sentenced by the same judge. Two other death row prisoners from this group - Vahid Bani-Amerian (33) and Abolhassan Montazer (66, who suffers from serious heart, lung and kidney problems) - remain at risk.

Over 150 international experts, Nobel laureates, the UN Special Rapporteur and several human rights groups had called for an immediate halt to the executions, citing serious violations of due process and human rights. The PMOI sees these killings as part of the regime's systematic campaign to eliminate the opposition, which intensified amid recent uprisings across the country and political instability following the reported death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
