EU Energy Commissioner warns member states: Prepare for a long crisis!
Dan Jorgensen

European Commissioner for Energy, Dan Jorgensen, has urged European Union member states to prepare for possible disruptions in energy supplies, in a letter to energy ministers ahead of an informal meeting.

Jorgensen believes that while the impact on energy supply has been limited so far, governments need to take precautions to cope with potential long-term disruptions. He points out that Europe's high dependence on energy imports makes it vulnerable to geopolitical developments, including tensions and conflicts in the Middle East.

According to data cited in the communication, gas prices in Europe have increased by around 70% since the end of February, in a period characterised by an escalation of the international situation. However, oil and natural gas supplies have not been directly affected by developments in the Strait of Hormuz, as the bulk of European imports come from other regions.

The Commissioner expresses particular concern about the short-term supply of refined petroleum products, such as kerosene and diesel. He calls on governments to avoid policies that could increase fuel consumption, restrict trade in petroleum products or hinder the operation of refineries within the EU.

The letter also highlights the need for member states to postpone any non-urgent maintenance at refineries, in order to guarantee a stable energy supply for the citizens and economy of the European Union.
