Republicans nominate Steve Scalise for speaker of the House of Representatives

Lawmakers from the Republican Party have nominated Steve Scalise to become the new speaker of the House of Representatives. But, now they must try to unify the party so that he is elected during the voting in the House, after the dismissal of Kevin McCarthy from the leadership of this institution.

In the private vote held in Congress on October 11, Jim Jordan and Scalise were in the running for the nomination. The latter won the nomination by a narrow margin.

"We have a lot of work to do," Scalise said after the vote.

The vote for his election could be held as early as Wednesday afternoon.

Last week, McCarthy became the first leader of the House of Representatives in American history to be impeached during a vote. It is still unclear whether Republican lawmakers, supporters of former President Donald Trump, who voted to fire McCarthy, will vote to elect Scalise.

Democrats are expected to oppose the Republican nomination.

For Scalise to be elected head of the House of Representatives, a majority of the 435-seat institution must vote for him.

"I don't know how we're going to get to 2018 votes," said House Republican Representative Troy Nehls. "It's going to be a long week."

Hardliners voted to remove McCarthy after he struck a deal with Senate Democrats to defund government agencies.

The election of the new speaker comes at a moment of political crisis in the House of Representatives, just ten months after the Republicans won the majority in this institution.

For Scalise to become the new speaker of the House, he needs to get almost all of the Republican votes. Usually 218 votes are required, but currently there are two empty seats in the House, making the threshold for electing the new speaker lower to 217. /REL
