The Israel Defense Forces have ordered civilians to leave several large areas of the Gaza Strip after it resumed its military offensive there.
" For your safety, we invite you to relocate to the known IDP shelters in Al-Fukhari, Al-Shaboura, Al-Zuhur and Tal Al-Sultan neighborhoods ," the Israeli military said in a statement published on social media in Arabic. .
It is not clear how many people in Gaza have access to social media because access to electricity and the Internet is not possible due to the war.
Later on Sunday, the Israeli army instructed people to leave several areas in northern Gaza, including Jabalya, Shejaiya, Zaytoun and the Old Gaza City. Many of the areas have previously been the target of heavy attacks by the Israeli army.
The Israeli military released a new map of Gaza on Friday, dividing the strip of land into hundreds of numbered sectors it called evacuation zones. He said he would use the map to advise people to evacuate civilian areas where he says Hamas has deployed military infrastructure.
The Israeli military also dropped leaflets in areas of southern Gaza that included a QR code that linked to the map when scanned if users had internet access, which is highly frowned upon in Gaza.
Attempts by CNN to contact people in Khan Younis to ask if they had seen the map were unsuccessful on Saturday and Sunday due to poor communications links.
The UN estimates that up to 1.8 million people in Gaza, or nearly 80 percent of the population, are internally displaced, having already been forced from their homes./CNN
