
The number of victims from the earthquake in Morocco has reached over two thousand dead. Rescue teams are continuing to search for survivors in devastated villages where houses made of mud bricks, stone and wood were damaged and mosque minarets were toppled by the quake. Meanwhile, residents who survived the earthquake are telling horror stories about what they experienced.
Dinner on Friday 8 September for Yassin Noumgharin was left almost untouched as his life and that of his family was turned upside down. Within seconds the dinner table was buried under the rubble of their now ruined house.
" This is the place where we were sitting for dinner and everything happened within five seconds ", says Mr. Noumghar.
Other residents say there are still people trapped under the rubble.
" There are still people buried here in this house, they didn't get the help they needed and they died. I saved my children and I am trying to find blankets and something to wear for them ," says Husein Adnaie, another survivor.
The village of Moulay Brahim is one of the most devastated by the earthquake that killed more than 2,000 people, while rescue operations continue to search for other survivors.
The Ministry of the Interior announced on Sunday morning over 2,000 dead and over 2,000 injured, saying that over 1,400 are in critical condition. The World Health Organization said more than 300,000 people have been affected by the disaster.
The epicenter of the earthquake was about 72 km southwest of Marrakesh, a city that is known for its mosques and medieval buildings and attracts many tourists.
" We were staying in Marrakesh and in our hotel all the people were sleeping outside by the pool because they were afraid of the aftershocks of the earthquake ," says Ms. Kirsten Dixon, who was staying in Marrakesh on business.
A security camera captured the moment of the earthquake in Marrakesh where a man is seen running as parts of a building begin to fall onto the street.
On Sunday, Pope Francis offered prayers and solidarity for victims of Morocco's deadliest earthquake in more than six decades.
" I want to express my closeness to the beloved people of Morocco, hit by a devastating earthquake. I pray for the injured, for those who lost their lives and for their relatives. I thank the rescuers and all those who are working to alleviate people's suffering. We stand with the people of Morocco ," Pope Francis said.
Morocco has announced three days of mourning and King Mohammed VI called for prayers for the dead to be held in mosques across the country on Sunday./ VOA
