International travel, which until a few years ago was considered commonplace for millions of citizens in the United Kingdom and Europe, is now facing a completely different reality. Rising geopolitical tensions, armed conflicts and insecurity have significantly limited the global map of safe destinations.
According to the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, the number of countries classified as high-risk for travel has increased significantly in recent years.
Currently, 14 countries are in the highest warning category, where it is recommended to avoid all travel due to serious security risks.
At the top of the list is Afghanistan, where the situation remains extremely unstable under Taliban rule, with high terrorism risks and a lack of assistance for foreign nationals.
Haiti also faces widespread violence from criminal gangs, kidnappings, and political instability that affects daily life.
In Europe, Belarus is considered a dangerous destination due to its authoritarian regime and the risk of arbitrary detentions, especially after the political tensions of recent years and close ties with Russia.
In West Africa, Burkina Faso and Mali remain areas of extreme risk due to the activity of jihadist groups, kidnappings and political instability following coups.
Meanwhile, Iran has become one of the most sensitive global hotspots, due to tensions with the US and Israel, increasing the risk of military escalation and detentions of foreign nationals.
Iraq also remains in a fragile situation, with ongoing attacks and regional tensions.
Israel itself faces a new period of uncertainty due to rocket attacks and tensions on the borders with Gaza and Lebanon. In Africa, Nigeria experiences deep instability following the 2023 coup and an increase in terrorist attacks.
The Palestinian region remains one of the most dangerous areas due to ongoing conflicts and movement restrictions, while Russia faces increased security risks as a result of the war in Ukraine and drone attacks.
In Africa, South Sudan remains one of the most unstable countries, with armed conflict and a high risk of kidnappings. Meanwhile, Syria remains in deep crisis after years of civil war, with the presence of terrorist groups and ongoing insecurity.
The list closes with Yemen, where the prolonged conflict and the presence of extremist organizations make the country one of the most dangerous in the world for travelers.
The global panorama shows a significant deterioration in security. Conflicts have increased, political tensions have increased, and more and more regions are classified as unsuitable for travel.
