Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reacted to the tragedy that shook the country, where an Air India plane with 242 people on board crashed. He expressed shock and added that "we cannot describe in words the pain we feel."
"The tragedy in Ahmedabad has shocked us and spread sadness. It is impossible to describe in words the pain we feel. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with all those affected. I am in touch with the ministers and authorities who are working to help those affected," Modi said.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Health, although he did not give figures, stated that the number of victims could be high. However, unconfirmed information, as reported by international media, speaks of at least 130 dead.
Air India said flight AI171, which departed Ahmedabad for London Gatwick at 1:38 p.m. local time, was carrying 242 passengers and crew members. Among them were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals and one Canadian national.
"The injured are being taken to the nearest hospitals ," the airline announced.
Ahmedabad airport said in a statement that all flights have been suspended until further notice after the plane crashed "shortly after takeoff, outside the airport".
