Concern is growing among voters in the United States about President Donald Trump's mental health, just over a year into his second term. According to several polls released in recent hours, a significant majority of American citizens believe that the age of the president, who will turn 80 in June, is negatively affecting his clarity and ability to govern.
A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll found that about 61% of respondents consider Trump “increasingly unpredictable as he gets older.” This assessment comes not only from a majority of Democratic and independent voters, but also from a portion of Republicans. The data also shows a decline in the number of people who describe the president as “mentally sharp and capable of handling complex challenges”: this percentage has fallen from 54% in September 2023 to 45% currently.
Other polls confirm this trend. According to measurements published by CNN, concern about Trump's cognitive abilities has increased compared to the past, with part of the public opinion linking his age to difficulties in public appearances and in managing government obligations. In some polls, over 50% of voters have expressed doubts about his mental or physical readiness to fully exercise the presidential duties.
The issue of mental health has received increased attention in the public debate ahead of the State of the Union address, during which Trump delivered his longest speech ever before Congress, highlighting the achievements of his administration and aiming to mobilize his electoral base.
The poll results reflect a strongly polarized political climate: while a large portion of the Republican electorate continues to express confidence in the president's ability to lead the country, general dissatisfaction with his performance - on economic, political and institutional issues - is also fueling doubts about his capacity for leadership.
