Austria's permanent representative to the EU has resigned from his post in Brussels after what the government in Vienna described as "accusations".
Thomas Oberreiter submitted his resignation to Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger "for personal reasons," an Austrian government spokesman said.
"After Federal Minister Meinl-Reisinger learned of the allegations, the Foreign Ministry immediately looked into the matter," the spokesperson said.
The spokesman said that the acceptance of the resignation "should not be considered as confirmation of the allegations."
His departure follows a report by Der Standard in Austria about a blog with sexually explicit content. The report said Oberreiter denied the accusation and resigned to save Austria from further embarrassment.
"For reasons of data protection and the privacy of the person in question and his relatives, we cannot provide further details," the government spokesman said.
Oberreiter has worked in the Austrian foreign service for more than 30 years and has served in several key positions, including that of chief of staff under Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg of the conservative Austrian People's Party.
