The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, said that today's attack by Russia that hit the energy sector of Ukraine was aimed at the gas facilities that supply the European Union.
"The main target was the energy sector, various facilities in the industry, both electricity and gas transit facilities. In particular, those gas facilities that are crucial to ensure safe delivery to the European Union," he said.
Moscow earlier claimed that its attacks were in response to attempts by the Kiev regime to damage Russian energy and industrial facilities.
The Russian defense ministry said it had carried out 35 attacks in the past week against energy facilities, defense factories, railway infrastructure, air defenses and ammunition stockpiles in Ukraine.
The attacks were "in response to attempts by the Kiev regime to damage Russian energy and industrial facilities," he said.
