Former President Barack Obama, along with his wife Michelle Obama, and former President Bill Clinton have reacted strongly to the killing of 37-year-old American Alex Pretti, who was shot dead by federal immigration agents during an operation in Minneapolis, calling the event a "heartbreaking tragedy" and a "wake-up call" for all Americans.
In a joint statement, the Obamas stressed that Pretti’s death should be seen as a wake-up call to the danger that the nation’s core values are “under attack.” They sharply criticized the behavior of federal agency officers and the “irresponsible” use of force by some ICE and Border Patrol agents, saying that the released videos contradict official versions that claim Pretti was a threat to the officers.
Bill Clinton also described the situation in Minneapolis as "horrific," and stressed the need for responsibility and deep reflection. He warned that decisions made at this time could shape American history for decades, adding that if 250 years of freedoms are jeopardized, it could be very difficult to restore them.
Pretti's death has sparked widespread protests in dozens of US cities, including Minneapolis, New York, Washington DC, San Francisco and Los Angeles, where thousands of protesters have demanded justice, the withdrawal of federal immigration agents and a full investigation into the incident.
