NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that the alliance's member countries are holding joint discussions on possible ways to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, at a time of increased tensions in the region.
"Allies are holding coordinated discussions to see how the situation can be addressed and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz guaranteed ," Rutte said.
He emphasized that this sea route has a special strategic importance, as a significant part of the global supply of energy and goods passes through it.
"It is essential that this key artery for global trade remains functional and secure," the NATO chief added, without giving concrete details on the measures that could be taken.
His statement comes at a time when the international community is seeking solutions to avoid escalating the situation and guarantee stability in one of the most sensitive maritime transport hotspots in the world.
