The long-awaited summit between US President Trump and Kremlin leader Putin ended without any concrete results. At the press conference, Trump gave the floor to Putin first.
According to the official announcement, the meeting between the presidents of Russia and the United States lasted 2 hours and 45 minutes. The main topic of the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin was the end of Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine.
But apparently there are no concrete results from the meeting. After their summit in Alaska, Trump and Putin said their talks had been positive. Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a press statement, where he was given the floor first, that the talks had been constructive and rich in content. “We established good, direct contacts with Mr. Trump,” Putin said.
Putin thanked Trump for his efforts to resolve the conflict with Ukraine. He said they had discussed agreements that could serve as a starting point for a solution to the Ukraine conflict, but did not provide details.
"There is no deal until there is an agreement"
Trump also praised the atmosphere of the talks – but he didn’t say anything concrete either. “We had a very productive meeting and agreed on a lot of things. There are very few open issues. Some are not that important. One may be the most important, but we have a very good chance of achieving our goal. We’re not there yet, but we have a very good chance of getting there,” Trump said, adding:
"There is no deal until there is an agreement."
Trump announced that he would speak by phone with NATO and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. No questions from the press were allowed after the statements made by the two presidents.
After the meeting, Trump gave an interview to Fox News. He stressed that Ukraine should agree to a possible deal with Russia and advised Zelensky: “Make the deal. You have to make the deal.” Russia, he said, is a “very great power,” while Ukraine is not. It is not clear whether Trump had spoken to Zelensky by phone before the interview.
Ischinger: Alaska summit was a 1:0 victory for Putin
The Alaska summit between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin was a clear victory for Putin, believes former chairman of the Munich Security Conference, Wolfgang Ischinger.
"Alaska: Putin got the red carpet with Trump, Trump nothing," Ischinger wrote on the X platform.
"As we feared: no ceasefire, no peace. No real progress, very clearly 1:0 for Putin – no new sanctions. For the Ukrainians: nothing. For Europe: deeply disappointing," Ischinger wrote.
Ischinger was Germany's ambassador to the United States from 2001 to 2006 and was chairman of the Munich Security Conference from 2008 to 2022./DW
