French President Emmanuel Macron appeared pessimistic after the summit hosted by President Donald Trump at the White House regarding Ukraine.
The cause of Macron's pessimism was not the discussions, but the fact that Vladimir Putin would want or support peace.
"Looking at the situation and the facts, I don't see President Putin very willing to make peace right now," the French president told NBC News in an interview after the summit at the White House. He added, "Maybe I'm being too pessimistic."
However, Macron tried not to dampen US President Donald Trump's enthusiasm in the interview.
Within days, the US president first met with Putin and then brought Zelensky, Merz, Macron and several other European heads of state to the White House on Monday.
Trump apparently strongly believes in a "deal" on Ukraine.
"Your president's optimism is serious. So if he thinks he can reach an agreement, that's excellent news and we must do everything we can to reach an excellent agreement," Macron said.
