Photos of the waitress suspected of causing the tragic fire at Le Constellation nightclub in the tourist resort of Crans Montana have been released.
She is seen perched on a colleague's shoulders, holding a firecracker, moments before a deadly fire destroyed the nightclub, killing at least 47 people and injuring 115 others.
Separate footage taken minutes later shows a brave visitor trying to put out the flames as they spread across the bar's wooden ceiling. Witnesses say the fire was sparked by a firecracker, placed in a champagne bottle, as around 200 people had gathered at the venue to celebrate New Year's Eve.
Despite the young man's efforts to bring the flames under control, the fire spread quickly, climbing the narrow wooden stairs and causing explosions so loud that residents believed it was a terrorist attack.
Survivors described scenes of horror inside the club as people burned, suffocated by smoke and desperately tried to escape in panic. The serious injuries, mostly to young people, many in their teens and 20s, were such that Swiss officials said it could take days to release all the names of the victims.
Families now face an agonizing wait to learn whether their loved ones have died in the early hours of Thursday.
Swiss President Guy Parmelin called the fire "one of the worst tragedies our country has ever experienced," noting that "many young lives were taken ingloriously."
As the difficult process of identifying the 47 dead in a fire that engulfed a bar in the Crans Montana ski resort continues, the first victim of the deadly blaze has been identified as Emanuele Galepini, a teenage Italian golfer.
The 17-year-old was identified by the Italian Golf Federation, which said it mourns the death of a "young athlete who embodied passion and authentic values. In this moment of great sadness, our thoughts are with his family and all those who loved him."
Emanuele, from Genoa, was a very good young golfer and member of the Rapallo Golf Club. His father had previously told local media that he had disappeared.
At the same time, over 100 people are fighting for their lives in the hospitals where they were transferred, some of whom cannot be identified due to their critical condition.
Swiss investigators are probing the causes of the fire at Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, which left around 47 dead and 115 injured during New Year's celebrations.
Valais councillor Stephane Ganzer estimates that "80 to 100 people are in a state of absolute emergency."
"Of the approximately one hundred people hospitalized, many have not been identified," Ganzer added.
