Spanish authorities have seized more than eight tons of hashish in Ibiza. This is the largest amount ever caught on the island.
According to Spanish media, the Paiño vessel arrived in the port of Ibiza together with another patrol boat to transport more than 8,000 kilograms of hashish distributed in dozens of packages.
As reported this Wednesday by the Tax Agency, agents of the Customs Surveillance Service of the Tax Agency in Ibiza, as part of a coastal control operation, hit an organization transporting drugs in suspicious vans, which then resulted in one of the arrests biggest drug busts in the Balearic Islands.
Officials of the agency were conducting land patrol surveillance along the coast of Ibiza, when they discovered three vans with large capacity and storage circulating, almost without lights, on a road that connects Sant Joan de Labritja with one of the bays of this municipality.
The drivers of the three vans, after discovering the Customs police vehicle, suddenly braked, causing a collision between them and the people living in the area fled through the forest.
The three seized vans were loaded with a large number of burlap bundles, the type commonly used to traffic hashish by sea. In total, the agents seized a total of 216 packages of hashish, with a gross weight of about 8,300 kilograms of hashish.
Investigators are looking into the possibility that the criminal organization used the island of Ibiza as a temporary holding point for the drugs, for later redistribution to other points on the European continent.
