US Senate rejects resolution to withdraw forces from Iran

The vote, which passed 52 votes to 47, marks the fourth time this year that the Senate has chosen to strip the president of his war powers, in a conflict that Democrats consider illegal and unjustified.

The Republican-led US Senate on Wednesday rejected a Democratic attempt to stop Donald Trump's war on Iran, rejecting a resolution that would have forced the US to withdraw its forces from the region until Congress approved further action.

The vote, which passed 52-47, marks the fourth time this year that the Senate has chosen to strip the president of his war powers, in a conflict that Democrats consider illegal and unjustified, according to the Associated Press.

Republicans say they will continue, for now, to trust Trump's wartime leadership, citing Iran's nuclear capabilities and the significant consequences of a withdrawal. But Republican lawmakers are also eager to see the conflict end — and they could change their minds in the near future.

Under the War Powers Act of 1973, Congress must declare war or authorize the use of force within 60 days of its onset, a deadline that expires at the end of this month. The law allows for a possible 30-day extension, but lawmakers have made clear they want the administration to come up with a plan to end the conflict soon.
