One of the US Navy's most advanced assets, designed for special operations and covert underwater missions
In recent days, allegations have been raised that the United States has deployed the stealth submarine USS "Jimmy Carter" (SSN-23), one of the US Navy's most unique assets, used for special missions, in the region near Iran.
The USS “Jimmy Carter” is the third Seawolf-class submarine, considered among the most advanced in the US Navy. The program for this class was terminated due to its very high cost, despite its high performance.
This submarine differs from the other two units of the same class due to an additional module called the Multi-Mission Platform (MMP), about 30 meters long, which gives it expanded operational capabilities. Details on these capabilities remain largely classified.
The USS Jimmy Carter is also equipped to carry small underwater vehicles for special operations (DCS), which are used by the elite Navy SEALs for infiltration and covert operations near enemy shores. These capabilities make it an important platform for reconnaissance and intervention missions.
Its construction cost reached about $3.5 billion in 2005, while additional modifications added about another $1 billion. The submarine can also be used to deploy autonomous underwater vehicles (UUVs) and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), expanding its role in complex maritime operations.
According to the same sources, the submarine has high stealth capabilities, with speeds reaching up to 35 knots and very silent operation around 20 knots, which makes detection difficult. It can carry heavy torpedoes and long-range missiles.
It should be noted that there is no official confirmation from US authorities about the deployment of this submarine near Iran. The claims remain at the level of media reports and have not been independently verified.
