The Pentagon has decided to send more Marines and warships to the Middle East after increased Iranian attacks in the Strait of Hormuz, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing three US officials.
According to the report, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has approved a request from US Central Command (CENTCOM), responsible for US military operations in the region, for the deployment of an amphibious ready group, along with an expeditionary unit of Marines.
Officials said the task force typically includes several warships and about 5,000 Marines. Among the forces being moved to the region is the USS Tripoli, previously stationed in Japan, along with the Marines assigned to it.
Two of the officials said the ship and its personnel were headed to the Middle East, while US Marines are already present in the region to support operations against Iran.
ABC News, citing two official US sources, also reported that a unit of US Marines deployed on three amphibious assault ships has already been sent to the Middle East. According to this report, the unit was stationed in Japan and was transferred to the region as part of the escalating conflict with Iran.
