The Trump administration is pressuring foreign governments to join a new coalition to support freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz as Iran’s war continues to block the vital waterway. The coalition, called “Building Maritime Freedom,” aims to establish security in the strait, which has become a major stumbling block in diplomatic negotiations between the U.S. and Iran, with both countries maintaining their own blockades.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly asserted that the United States does not need help from other countries in the strait and has also sharply criticized other countries, especially those in Europe, for not doing enough. Meanwhile, fuel prices around the world are rising sharply.
A U.S. State Department cable sent this week to headquarters around the world called on diplomats to announce the formation of the new coalition and "seek the participation of partners" by Friday.
The cable, seen by CNN, instructs diplomats not to discuss the issue with “U.S. adversaries, including Russia, China, Belarus and Cuba.” The Wall Street Journal first reported the cable. According to the cable, the coalition will be led by the Departments of State and Defense, through U.S. Central Command.
" The MFC will take steps to ensure safe passage, including providing real-time information, safety guidance, and coordination to ensure that ships can safely transit these waters," the cable said.
He noted that diplomats should present participation in the coalition as a way to strengthen the collective ability to restore freedom of navigation and protect the global economy.
The cable acknowledges that countries can contribute to the MFC in different ways based on their capabilities and interests.
"Contributions may include diplomatic coordination, information sharing, sanctions enforcement, naval presence, or other forms of support. We welcome all levels of engagement and do not expect your country to displace maritime assets or resources from existing maritime structures ," the cable said.
The United Kingdom and France have undertaken a multilateral effort to secure the strait, which could eventually include deploying military assets in the water if a peace deal is reached.
