The US intervenes to minimize disputes between Poland and Ukraine

Washington said on Thursday that Poland remains a close ally of Ukraine, after Warsaw said it would no longer provide arms to Kiev amid a dispute over wheat imports.

At a press conference Thursday, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan downplayed the differences between the two countries.

"When I read the headlines this morning, of course I was concerned and had questions about it. But then the Polish government spokesman clarified that in fact Poland would continue to help Ukraine with Polish-made equipment, including ammunition for howitzer heavy artillery ," Mr Sullivan said.

Asked about his country's support for Kiev on Wednesday, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said no new weapons would be sent to Ukraine.

" We are no longer transferring any weapons to Ukraine, because now we are arming ourselves with the most modern weapons ," he told Poland's Polsat News.

Warsaw later clarified that it continues to supply Ukraine with arms and ammunition, which are part of previously agreed deliveries.

Poland has so far been one of Ukraine's most committed allies since Russia's offensive began in February 2022. Poland has hosted some 1.6 million refugees from Ukraine and provided significant military support to Kiev, including German tanks Leopard 2, Soviet-era T-72 tanks and MiG-29 fighter jets.

But disputes between the two countries were sparked by the decision of Poland, Hungary and Slovakia to unilaterally impose restrictions on Ukrainian imports of wheat and some other agricultural products, following the EU's decision to lift them./ VOA
