Former Italian president Giorgio Napolitano has passed away today at the age of 98. He will be remembered as one of the most beloved figures in Italian politics, since in addition to two terms as president, he asked you to stay for another term.
He was also a friend of the Albanians. In 2014, he visited Tirana, where he was awarded the Flag Decoration by his counterpart at that time, Bujar Nishani.
" The further process of expansion is an ambitious goal, the aspiration of Albania and other countries represents a strong signal of confidence in difficult times. Italy, as in the past, will never lack confidence and support. We hope that Italy will open the presidency with Albania acceded with full rights. It should be clear to everyone that the country of Albania is in the Union. If Europe has represented a lot for Albania, Albania for its part has openly shown that it has done and can do a lot for Europe ", said President Napolitano at that time during a speech in the Albanian Parliament.
But who is Giorgio Napolitano? He was born in Naples on June 29, 1925. He is married to Clio Bittoni and has two sons, Giovanni and Giulio.
Napolitano graduated in law from the University of Naples in 1947. Since 1942, when he was a student, Napolitano joined an anti-fascist group and in 1945 he joined the Italian Communist Party where he later became a post leader held until the creation of the Democratic Party of the Italian Left.
Napolitano was elected to the Chamber of Deputies for the first time in 1953 and, apart from the Fourth Legislature, he has been present in parliament as a deputy until 1996, always elected in the Naples area.
As a deputy, his parliamentary activity began as a member of the Parliamentary Committee on the budget.In the eighth and ninth legislatures from 1981 to 1986, Napolitano led the parliamentary group of communists in the Chamber of Deputies.
During the 80s, as a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, his activity was mainly focused on international issues and European policies. In 1989, he was elected a member of the European Parliament, a position he held until 1992. That same year, Napolitano was elected Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, a position he held until 1994. From 1996 to 1998, Napolitano held the position of Minister of Interior in Romano Prodi's government.
From June 1999 to 2004, he headed the Constitutional Affairs Committee in the European Parliament. In 2005, Napolitano was elected senator for life.
In May 2006, Girgio Napolitano was elected President of Italy with 543 votes. In April 2013, Napolitano was re-elected President with 738 votes.
