The United States has reportedly drawn up plans for the long-term partition of the Gaza Strip, which would include Israeli-controlled areas and an international army, according to an exclusive published by the Guardian on Friday, citing planning documents and informed sources.
Israeli- and internationally-controlled areas, called Green Zones in the report, would be where reconstruction efforts would be focused, while Red Zones, which are not controlled by either, would be left in ruins.
Foreign military forces are said to be deployed alongside the IDF in eastern Gaza, with the Yellow Line dividing the site where the reconstruction would take place, according to US military planning documents seen by the Guardian and sources briefed on US plans.
“ Ideally, you would like to finish it all, right? But that is aspirational. It will take some time. It will not be easy. As things progress and you create the conditions to have significant progress in reconstruction, you will have Gaza civilians starting to move there. People will say ‘hey, we want this’, and so things will evolve in that direction. No one is talking about a military operation to force it ,” an anonymous US official told the British newspaper.
US plans for Gaza's future in development
The new American plan reportedly comes after the US decided against fenced-in Alternative Safe Communities (ASCs), which would see sporadic reconstruction efforts in the Gaza Strip isolated from potential terrorists.
" This is a brief glimpse of a concept that was presented at a certain time. They have already moved on from that ," the US official said.
Humanitarian organizations denied on Friday that they had been notified of the change in plans, the Guardian reported.
" The US has been very clear that it wants to define the vision and not pay for it," said a diplomatic source, noting US reluctance to contribute to reconstruction efforts.
Another document reviewed by the newspaper outlined plans for crossing zones, which would separate Israeli-controlled territory from that controlled by Hamas, as the terror group appears to be struggling to maintain control. / Adapted from "Pamphlet" by "Jerusalem Post"
