Russia and the United States have agreed to swap prisoners in an extraordinary multilateral deal, according to a senior Biden administration official.
The exchange will allow two wrongly arrested US citizens held by Moscow, Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and former US Marine Paul Whelan, to return home.
The United States has been in talks for years to secure the release of the two, whom the State Department has designated as wrongfully detained.
The parties have agreed to a prisoner transfer and that the detainees are expected to be in US custody soon, according to a senior administration official.
In turn, the US and its allies will return prisoners to Russia they hold under the deal, seeking anonymity to discuss matters not yet public.
