US President Donald Trump has declared that the United States has completely destroyed Iran's nuclear program, describing this intervention as the most powerful ever against Tehran.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump said: "Iran's nuclear program was destroyed like never before. That meant the end of their nuclear ambitions - at least for a period of time."
Trump's statement comes a week after US airstrikes targeted three major Iranian nuclear facilities. One of the main targets, he said, was the underground facility at Fordow, of which he said "the bomb went through the structure like butter. Now there's just thousands of tons of rock. The whole complex is destroyed."
Trump claimed that Iran failed to remove enriched uranium from the Fordow facility before the attack.
"It's not easy to remove it. It's very dangerous, very difficult and a complicated process. Moreover, they didn't have time, because they didn't know we were approaching, " he said.
According to Trump, the US had information that Iran was just weeks away from producing a nuclear weapon. But now, he believes Tehran no longer has the will or capacity to continue with the program.
"The last thing they want to do now is think about nuclear energy. They need to focus first on getting the country back up and running," the president added.
The US president also expressed optimism that the joint US-Israeli campaign against Iran will encourage more countries to sign peace with Israel, within the framework of the Abraham Accords.
"We already have some very good countries that are part of the agreements. I believe there will be more. Iran was the main obstacle. In fact, at one point I thought that Iran could also join the Abraham Accords ," he said.
Trump's statements are expected to provoke strong reactions in the international arena, especially in Tehran. Iranian authorities have yet to officially respond to these claims.
