The head of the British secret service warns the world: Russia, a revisionist
Blaise Metrewelli, head of MI6

The head of Britain's Secret Intelligence Service, known as MI6, will warn that Russia poses an "aggressive, expansionist and revisionist" threat in her first speech since taking office.

Blaise Metrewelli took over from Richard Moore in October and became the first woman to head MI6, a role publicly known as "C", in its 116-year history.

"(Vladimir) Putin should have no doubts, our support is unwavering. The pressure we are exerting on Ukraine will continue," Metrewelli will say, according to preliminary excerpts of her speeches.

She adds that "exporting chaos is a feature, not a flaw, of the Russian approach to international engagement, and we should be prepared for this to continue until Putin is forced to change his calculations."

Britain has imposed sanctions on several Russian businessmen, political leaders, companies, ships and entities, including the entire GRU military intelligence service, since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Over the weekend, Germany hosted US and Ukrainian delegations for talks on a ceasefire agreement, ahead of a summit in Berlin later on Monday, which will be attended by European leaders.

Metrewell will also highlight the need to strengthen the use of technology to address threats to the UK's security, including terrorism and information warfare.

“Technological excellence must permeate everything we do. Not just in our labs, but in the field, in our craft, and, most importantly, in the mindset of every officer. We must be as comfortable with lines of code as we are with human resources, fluent in Python, as well as multiple languages,” she says.

Richard Knighton, the head of the British armed forces, will also call in a special speech on Monday for a "whole of society" approach to defense in the face of growing insecurity and threats, and highlight the growing possibility of a Russian invasion of a NATO member country.
