The UN condemns Russia for refusing humanitarian aid to Russian-occupied areas affected by the collapse of the Nova Kakhovka dam earlier this month.
"The UN has been engaged with the governments of Ukraine and the Russian Federation regarding the effective delivery of humanitarian aid to all people affected by the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam," said Denise Brown, the humanitarian coordinator for Ukraine, adding that Russia until had now refused the UN's request to enter the areas under its occupation.
The UN called on the Russian authorities to act in accordance with their obligations under international humanitarian law and that the organization will continue to seek the necessary assistance in the affected areas occupied by Russia.
The number of victims from the collapse of the big dam has increased to at least 45 people. Last week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for international support and accused Russia of not providing any real help to people in the flooded areas.
"In the occupied territory, it is possible to help people only in some areas, Russian terrorists are doing everything to make as many victims of the disaster as possible," Zelensky said.
Russian-backed officials in the occupied parts of Ukraine said the government would provide maximum support to the affected areas and that humanitarian aid was being delivered.
