Australian far-right senator Pauline Hanson has sparked public and political outrage after appearing in Parliament wearing a burqa on Monday. It is the second time Hanson has used the traditional Muslim women's garment as a political tool to push her call for a national ban on full-face veils in public.
Hanson entered the Senate chamber wearing a burqa shortly after being denied the right to introduce a bill that would have banned them and similar clothing in public spaces. Her action sparked strong reactions from the rest of the senators, with many of them breaking out in protests and demanding an adjournment of the session. The situation became even more tense when Hanson refused an order to remove the veil.
"This is a blatant act of racism, by a racist senator," said Mehreen Faruqi, a Green Party senator from New South Wales and herself of Muslim descent. Fatima Payman, an independent senator from Western Australia and also a Muslim, also called the action "disgraceful."
Pauline Hanson has been a prominent figure in Australian politics since the 1990s, when she gained notoriety for her anti-Asian immigration and anti-asylum-seeking rhetoric. Throughout her political career, she has also taken a strong stance against Islamic women's clothing. In 2017, Hanson appeared in parliament for the first time wearing a burqa, calling for its national ban.
Her party, One Nation, currently holds four seats in the Australian Senate, after winning two new seats in May's general election, in a climate where support for far-right and anti-immigration policies is growing.
