South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has 'survived' impeachment after a vote against him was boycotted by ruling party lawmakers.
South Korea declared a state of military emergency a few days ago and withdrew troops from surrounding the parliament building just hours later as the country descended into violent anti-government protests demanding the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol.
Parliament met today to vote his dismissal from office as the election was boycotted by the government leaving the chamber before the vote began. While only 2 legislators remained in the hall, a government deputy returned and voted against the dismissal of the president.
From outside the hall, the shouts of the opposition could be heard addressing the colleagues of the majority: "Go inside, you cowards".
If this televoting is called closed for today, then the next date to vote on Yoon's impeachment is December 11.
Returning lawmaker Kim Sang-wook described his predicament, telling reporters at the National Assembly that he believes conservatism that "protects the free Republic of Korea" should be preserved.
Meanwhile, Kim Sang-wook says he heard the president's statement when he apologized, adding that he would trust the party to respond.
"I want to believe in his words ," said Kim.
