Several airstrikes hit the southern suburbs of Beirut overnight, Lebanon's state news agency (NNA) reported, while Israel announced the launch of "limited and targeted ground operations" against Hezbollah in the south of the country.
Footage published by Reuters showed a large cloud of smoke rising over the southern areas of the Lebanese capital, known as a Hezbollah stronghold and often the target of Israeli airstrikes.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it carried out attacks on "multiple terrorist targets" with the aim, according to them, of "mitigating threats in the operational environment" before the entry of ground forces.
The NNA agency also reported multiple attacks in various areas of southern Lebanon.
According to Lebanon's Health Ministry, at least 850 people have been killed and over 2,100 others injured since the conflict began escalating as of Sunday afternoon. CNN notes that it has not been able to independently verify these figures.
Meanwhile, United Nations peacekeepers stated that during a patrol near their bases they were shot at, "most likely by non-state armed groups," but without any injuries.
On the other hand, Hezbollah announced that it had carried out five attacks on Monday, while on Sunday it claimed to have carried out 25 attacks targeting targets in Israel, the Golan Heights and Israeli army positions in Lebanese territory.
