Trump said a peace plan could be approved within "a few weeks" if negotiations "go well"...
US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a landmark meeting at Mar-a-Lago, where they discussed key issues for ending the war in Ukraine and a possible peace plan. After the meeting, they held a joint press conference.
Trump began his remarks by listing the European leaders he and Volodymyr Zelensky spoke with moments before appearing before the media, including the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Finland, Poland and Norway, plus the heads of the European Union.
Trump said a peace plan could be approved within "a few weeks" if negotiations "go well."
" We thought it was appropriate to talk to them and our meeting was excellent. We covered, some would say, 95%, I don't know what percentage, but we've made a lot of progress in ending that war," Trump said .
Volodymyr Zelensky, on the other hand, began his speech by thanking Trump for a great meeting in a wonderful place. He said the teams today discussed all aspects of the peace framework and added that the 20-point peace plan is "90% agreed upon." He also stressed that the US-Ukraine security guarantees were 100% agreed upon.
" We agreed that security guarantees are a key moment in achieving lasting peace and our teams will continue to work on all aspects ," he said.
Donald Trump was then asked about security guarantees for Ukraine, for which he said great progress has been made.
" I think we're doing very well. We may be very close or have one or two very difficult issues, but I think we're doing very well. We made a lot of progress today, but we've really made it over the last month. This is not a one-day deal process. There are very complicated things ," Trump said.
Asked what thorny issues remain unresolved, Trump said the issue of territories remains the most delicate.
" I think the land that you're talking about, some of that land is occupied. Some of that land is probably available for purchase, but it could be taken over the next period of several months, and it's better to make a deal ," Trump said.
Asked if he planned to go to Ukraine if he could find a deal to end the war, he said he might speak to the Ukrainian Parliament soon.
" We would like to get the deal done and not necessarily have to leave. I have offered to go and speak to their parliament. Whether that would help, I don't know if it would help. I think it probably would help, but I don't know ," Trump said.
Volodymyr Zelensky then intervened to tell Trump that he would be welcome in Ukraine if he wanted to come.
"I'm not sure if it would really be necessary, but if it would help save 25,000 lives a month or whatever, I would certainly be willing to do that ," Trump replied.
Asked about the highly contested Donbas region in eastern Ukraine, Zelensky said he must respect his country's Constitution, implying he is not willing to make territorial concessions.
“We must respect the law and our people, as well as the territory that we control. And of course, our position is very clear. That is why President Trump said that this is a very difficult question. Ukraine has a different position than Russia on this issue ,” he said.
