Will Zelensky's expression of regret and clear desire to end the war bring about a de-escalation of the situation and an improvement in relations between the two states?
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky offered an "olive branch" to Donald Trump, aimed at improving their relations and ending the war with Russia.
Zelensky chose social media (the American leader's preferred means of communication) to express his opinion.
He chose not to apologize after his Oval Office altercation with Trump last Friday, a move that several members of the US administration have called for, even though it was the US president and his deputy JD Vance who removed him from the White House. Instead, he described the meeting as "regrettable", saying that "it didn't go the way it should have" and that now is "time to make things right".
"It is a pity that it happened this way. Kiev is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible," Zelensky said in his reaction.
Rejecting the false claims of Trump allies like Elon Musk (the latter said that Zelensky wants an endless war), the Ukrainian president declared that he wants the war to end and that he is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible.
"We are ready to work quickly to end the war, and the first stages could be the release of prisoners and a ceasefire in the sky - a ban on missiles, long-range drones, bombs on energy and other civilian infrastructure - and an immediate ceasefire at sea, if Russia will do the same ," Zelensky said.
Appealing to the US president's ego, Zelensky praised Trump's "strong leadership" and stressed his gratitude for American support, responding to criticism from the Trump administration that he is not showing enough gratitude.
Zelensky also stated that Kiev was ready to sign a major minerals deal with Washington, something Trump has long sought.
This message appears to be an attempt by Zelensky to mend his relationship with Trump, to outline his idea of ending the war and moving towards peace. A conflict that Ukraine did not seek, but was brought to its soil by the invading forces of Russia.

Another key factor is how Vladimir Putin will react and whether he can afford a limited ceasefire in a war he started and - unlike Zelensky - seems to have no desire to stop the war. / Adapted from "Pamphlet" by "Sky News"
