Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has responded with the same language to US President Donald Trump, who warned of imposing tariffs.
He announced that Canada would impose 25% tariffs on $155 billion worth of US imports, while stressing that there is no justification for the tariffs the US has imposed on Canada.
According to Trudeau, the US is trying to appease Putin while declaring a trade war on Canada, a close ally, a leader he called a "dictator and a murderer."
He announced that $30 billion worth of American goods would be subject to tariffs immediately, while the remaining goods, totaling $125 billion, would be taxed within 21 days.
Trudeau said Canada's tariffs will remain in place until the U.S. withdraws its measures. He stressed that Canada will respond calmly and reasonably, but will not back down from this trade showdown.
“Now, it’s not my habit to agree with the Wall Street Journal, but Donald, as smart as you are, this is a very stupid thing to do. Our war between friends is exactly what our adversaries around the world want to see. Our tariffs will remain in place until the U.S. tariffs are lifted and not before. If these tariffs don’t stop, we are in active and ongoing conversations with the provinces and territories to pursue some other measures that are not tariffs, measures that will show that there are no winners in a trade war ,” Trudeau said.
