Why is Orban so popular with Trump?
Whether unlimited or not, Hungary's exemptions from US sanctions are a thorn in the side of those who have called for tougher action against Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
But how has Viktor Orban managed to secure relief from the notorious president for America's strong will?
Viktor Orban led Hungary as prime minister for 15 years, first from 1998 and 2002, before returning to power in 2010.
Like Donald Trump, the 62-year-old presents himself as a leading figure of illiberal populism in Europe, coining the term "illiberal democracy" for his authoritarian style of governance.
During Orban's rule, his Fidesz party and its supporters have gradually taken control of Hungary's media.
Orban has also become an outspoken critic of immigration in Europe and has been accused of rolling back LGBTQ+ rights.
Why is Orban so popular with Trump?
The far right in the US has seen Orban as a model for their ambitions.
Hungary has even been hosting a branch of the infamous Conservative Political Action Conference, a right-wing gathering close to Trump.
American journalist David Blevins said Orban and Trump are ideological comrades - both isolationists and conservatives, and project the image of strongmen. Trump has called him "a great leader."
Despite being within the EU and NATO, Orban is also considered Vladimir Putin's most trusted advocate in Europe and maintains warm relations with the Kremlin.
This led him to almost expect a summit between Trump and Putin last month, before the American leader canceled it.
Why does Orban need Trump's help?
Orban has faced pressure from Washington to end his country's dependence on Russian oil, as Trump has tried to force Moscow to the negotiating table over Ukraine.
This would come as another blow to Orbán during one of his most critical periods in office so far. The International Monetary Fund has warned that a disruption of Russian natural gas supplies across the EU could cost Hungary more than 4% of its GDP.
He faces a close election in April next year against the center-right Tisza Party, which is on the rise, amid the weakest economic period of his rule that threatens to end his term in office.
How did Orban convince Trump?
And indeed, the Hungarian leader appeared to be able to use his personal relationship with Trump to his advantage in a meeting with the president yesterday.
Unlike other bilateral meetings, Trump's courtesy towards his guest was evident, giving him more space than usual to speak.
Trump said he would "consider" granting a sanctions waiver before his administration confirmed it shortly thereafter.
While Orban needed an exemption from US sanctions, the US president needs Orban's influence over Vladimir Putin to help end the war in Ukraine. /Adapted from "Pamphlet" by "Sky News"
