Leading Republican senators have stepped out of line and are calling for an investigation into the scandal of leaking military attack plans in Yemen in a group chat on the Signal app.
Senators are demanding answers from the Trump administration, as they raise concerns that it will become a "significant political problem" if not properly addressed.
"This is what happens when you don't do your job seriously together," Alaska Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski told the Hill.
The Trump administration has faced criticism from Democrats — and now Republicans — after Monday's embarrassing revelation that a team of senior national security officials accidentally added a journalist to a private group chat on Signal, an encrypted messaging app.
The group, which included Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and others, discussed sensitive plans to engage in military strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen.
Top national security officials testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday, where Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and CIA Director John Ratcliffe confronted lawmakers about the scandal. National security officials said “no classified material” was shared in the conversation. Republicans are now also calling for investigations.
Leading Republican senators are calling for investigations into the leak, including the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Senate Intelligence Committee. Mississippi Sen. Roger Wicker, who chairs the Armed Services Committee, told The Hill he would ask the Defense Department inspector general to investigate the scandal.
National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, who reportedly added Goldberg to the group chat, took "full responsibility" for the leak in an appearance on Fox News Tuesday night. However, he did not describe how the leak occurred.
