The escalation of the conflict in the Middle East is unfolding on several fronts simultaneously, with Israel, Hezbollah, Iran, and the United States directly involved in the latest military developments.
The Israeli military announced on Monday that it had launched new strikes on Hezbollah targets across Lebanon, after earlier issuing evacuation warnings for areas in the country's south. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the operation came after Hezbollah fired several rockets at a military base in northern Israel, calling the attack revenge for the assassination of Iran's supreme leader.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said the military would act "with force against Hezbollah," stressing that Israel would not divert its attention and capabilities from confronting Iran.
IDF spokeswoman Brigadier General Effie Defrin said Israel does not rule out the possibility of a ground intervention in southern Lebanon in response to the nighttime rocket attacks. He confirmed that the military has ordered the evacuation of more than 50 villages in southern Lebanon.
Meanwhile, the United States is increasing its military presence in the Middle East. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that four US service members were killed during operations against Iran. According to CENTCOM spokesman Captain Tim Hawkins, a total of 18 US service members were seriously injured.
Sources quoted by CNN confirmed that four service members were killed in the same attack in Kuwait. Initially, US authorities had reported three dead and five seriously injured, but the toll was later updated to four dead and 18 seriously injured.
